KIMBERLY H. JAMES is a social justice-minded leader committed to promoting an atmosphere where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are embraced and championed. With 35 years of service in higher education, Dr. James was most recently the interim Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for CT State Community College (CT State). She previously served as Director of Student Access, Success and Engagement at Tunxis Community College (Farmington, CT) where she works collaboratively with stakeholders to implement strategies, services, and initiatives to advance educational success, especially for underserved student populations.
She is the CEO of KH James Consulting, LLC where she works with organizations to design policy to help foster a culture of inclusion and belonging in the workplace for those who have been systemically marginalized. She is also an adjunct professor teaching economics, race and justice, and cultural courses at Charter Oak State College and the University of Hartford.
Dr. James holds a Doctor of Management in Community College Policy and Administration from the University of Maryland University College, a Master of Education in Counseling/Psychology from Cambridge College, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance from Southern Connecticut State University. She holds certificates in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace, Post-Crises Leadership from the University of South Florida. She is also an expert in higher education policy with an emphasis on determining the use of key performance indicators as an instrument to provide funding in higher education.
She sits on the Board of Directors for the Tunxis Community College Foundation, Main Street Community Foundation (MSCF), National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), Wheeler Regional Family YMCA, and the Connecticut Association for Adult and Continuing Education. She also serves on several technical advisory and manufacturing advisory councils. She is a member of Bethel AME Church in Bloomfield, CT, the NAACP, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Her equity motto is “we cannot force someone to hear a message they are not ready to receive, but we must never underestimate the power of planting a seed.”
She is happily married to Hopeton James (AJ), the mother of Camille Moore, and the bonus mom of Kesha and Javenna James.
