Hawai’i Pacific University names Dr. Amy Nguyen-Chyung as Dean of the HPU College of Business

HPU has announced the appointment of Amy Nguyen-Chyung, Ph.D., as the new dean of the HPU College of Business. A highly accomplished academic leader with a distinguished background in entrepreneurship, innovation, and global business, Nguyen-Chyung will lead the college into an era of growth and transformation.

“Dr. Nguyen-Chyung brings unparalleled expertise in fostering entrepreneurship and building innovative programs that will benefit our students and the broader community,” said HPU President John Gotanda. “Her entrepreneurial mindset, coupled with her commitment to academic excellence, aligns perfectly with HPU’s mission to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.”

Nguyen-Chyung plans to lead initiatives at HPU that include the development of new academic degree and non-degree programs that foster entrepreneurial thinking and building business and international partnerships to create more win-win experiential learning opportunities.

“Having led the MBA capstone and multiple entrepreneurial institutes and initiatives at University of California San Diego and Rady School of Management, I know experiential education and entrepreneurial thinking give advantage to future business leaders, and I’d like to strengthen these areas in the College of Business. I am excited to work with the HPU leadership, faculty, students, alumni, and our partners both local and distant – including our private, public, non-profit, and military sectors – to build a competitive offering of more personalized business education aligned with the future of learning and work and with HPU’s unique location bridging Hawaiian, continental US, and international students and stakeholders.”

Nguyen-Chyung joins HPU from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) where she was the faculty co-director of the Institute for the Global Entrepreneur, a collaboration between the business and engineering schools. At the UCSD Rady School of Management, she played a pivotal role in elevating the school’s entrepreneurship rankings and spearheaded the capstone series that launched new ventures and was a recipient of the Most Valuable Professor award. Her leadership extended to the Sullivan Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, where she chaired the faculty committee. She also directed the Rady MicroMBA program and led Rady’s first global immersion program to Vietnam in 2024.

Before UCSD, she served as an assistant professor of strategy at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and also taught at the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. An innovative researcher and accomplished educator, she has received recognition and grants from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, published in scholarly and practice journals, and authored award-winning and widely distributed teaching materials.

Beyond academia, she has over 15 years of experience in consulting and international finance and investments, working with Fortune 500 companies and startups worldwide. She supports diversity in high growth ventures as a Limited Partner at Next Wave Impact, San Diego Angel Conference, and SoGal Ventures.

Nguyen-Chyung holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Business Administration from UC Berkeley’s Haas School, a joint MBA MPA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs, and an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, in East Asian Studies from Harvard University.

Nguyen-Chyung will begin her tenure as dean of the HPU College of Business in July 2025. In the meantime, she will be a consultant at the University.

Mount St. Mary’s Names John Nauright as Business School Dean

Following a national search, Mount St. Mary’s University has named John Nauright, Ph.D., as dean of the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business, effective June 14, 2021. He brings to the Mount deep experience in developing and leading innovative business programs both in the United States and internationally.

nauright-in-text.pngNauright currently serves as dean of the Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems and Human Services and director of the Clearfield Campus at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. He directs programs in business management and marketing; finance, insurance and risk management; accounting; computer science; recreation and tourism management; cultural heritage management; sport management; sport psychology; clinical mental health counseling; criminal justice; and social work as well as offering an integrative studies program and minors in entrepreneurship and environmental studies.

At Lock Haven he created multiple external partnerships, including with Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club of the Premier League in England; Preservation Pennsylvania; and Higher Digital, LLC.

Trainor, Ph.D. “John’s wealth of experience in both traditional and adult education and years of leadership on multi-campus universities will be invaluable to the Mount as we continue to expand our offerings both in Emmitsburg and Frederick.”

Nauright looks forward to shaping the Bolte School into a national and international leader in business education and the role of business in social and economic transformation. “I am thrilled to join the team at the Mount as we continue to develop incredible opportunities for both traditional on campus students and adult and continuing education students,” Nauright said. “The vision, ethical values, and approach to educating the whole person at the Mount is crucial to individual success and to the futures of our society and the world.”

Nauright comes to the Mount as the Knott Academic Center expansion and renovation moves into higher gear. The project, funded by a state grant and generous donations from the Bolte Family Foundation and Raphael Della Ratta, C’92, includes construction of an approximately 15,000 square foot addition and renovation of the 49,074 square foot existing building.  The upgrade includes enhancing the learning environment and building new classrooms, a Bloomberg Classroom Laboratory and faculty offices. The university also now offers its MBA program both in person and fully online.

The former vice president of the Dallas Griffins, now Dallas Jackals, of Major League Rugby, Nauright has lived and worked in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Barbados, Denmark and Scotland. In addition to being a visiting professor at leading universities in Barbados, China, Ghana, India and Russia, he is the author or editor of 27 books and has written over 150 refereed articles and chapters in the areas of sport, event and tourism management. He has made numerous media appearances around the world.

After receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history at University of South Carolina, Nauright earned his Ph.D. in African history, comparative history and political economy at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Led by Executive Vice President Kraig Sheetz, Ph.D., the search committee was assisted by RH Perry & Associates, based in Asheville, North Carolina.

CSU Stanislaus names Christene James as Vice President for Business and Finance and CFO

Stanislaus State President Ellen Junn has announced the appointment of Christene James as the new vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer.

James will join Stan State on Jan. 27 from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where she serves as the vice president for finance and administration and chief information officer.

“Ms. James is a highly resourceful senior leader with experience directing growth and leading operational excellence,” Junn said. “She has more than 25 years of experience in higher education and has worked in various roles and with students, staff, faculty, alumni and community stakeholders.”

Prior to Cornish, James was the assistant dean for finance and administration for the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Central Washington University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Washington. James is pursuing her Ph.D. in education at Oregon State University as part of their adult and higher education hybrid online program.

“I am excited and thankful that the CSU community has asked me to join the team.” James said. “I look forward to meeting the challenges and opportunities this position will provide. I hope to support the faculty, staff and students in meeting their goals.”
