JOSEPH R. FINK, Ph.D.,who is based in Sausalito, California, recently joined R. H. Perry & Associates as a Senior Consultant. Dr. Fink has served institutions of higher education in both the private and the public sectors for more than 40 years. From 1988-2011 Dr. Fink was president of Dominican University, a private liberal arts college in Marin County, California. Prior to that, he served as president of Misericordia University in Pennsylvania, and as president of Raritan Valley College, a public community college in New Jersey. He also served as dean of arts and sciences at the City Colleges of Chicago. Dr. Fink began his career as an Associate Professor of History and as Assistant to the President at Immaculata University Pennsylvania.
Dr. Fink has served as a Fellow of the American Council on Education, a member of the Council’s Commission on Leadership Development and its Commission for International Education. Joe was President of the Association of Mercy Colleges, a member of the Secretariat of NAICU (National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities), a consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and as a member of the Board of the Council of Independent Colleges in Washington, D.C.
While serving as President of Dominican, Dr. Fink restructured the management of the University and assumed control of its fiscal and academic affairs, organizing Dominican into four schools; adding 20 new academic undergraduate majors and a dozen graduate majors; and moving Dominican from a small liberal arts college to university status. During his tenure, the University’s enrollment nearly quadrupled – from 650 students when he arrived on campus in 1988, to more than 2,400 when he stepped down as president. Average SAT scores rose by more than 180 points, and annual gross operating revenues increased from $7.2 million to $60 million. Moreover, fundraising increased dramatically during his tenure, with the University raising approximately $92 million during his years as president.
Dr. Fink holds a Ph.D. in American History from Rutgers University, and an A.B. degree in History from Rider University in New Jersey. Joe also has been awarded four honorary doctorate degrees for his achievements in higher education and for his service to the community.
During his years as president of three different institutions of higher education, Dr. Fink has served on the Boards of more than 30 non-profit organizations including: the Commonwealth Club of California; the World Affairs Council of Northern California; the San Francisco Ballet; the Bay Area Council, the American Land Conservancy; and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
